Co-workers can either be a blessing or a curse. It’s great if you get along with your co-employees because it makes going to work more fun. A recent study reveals that people who have a good friend at work are more likely to have better work performance and job satisfaction. Furthermore, it has also been proven that getting along and having good relationships with people at work can help with career advancement and increased compensation.
However, some of us have to deal with nasty co-workers, which can fray our nerves, lose our concentration at work and negatively affect our performance and productivity. The worse thing about co-workers that we don’t like is that we are stuck with them. It may be challenging but dealing with these kind of individuals professionally is still the best way to go. You should make an effort to like your co-workers, however obnoxious they may be. After all, breeding animosity and contempt in the workplace may cost you that promotion, or worse, your job.
The key to becoming a well-liked coworker is to be friendly to everyone, even those you don’t particularly like. Here are some tips to help you become the nice co-worker everybody loves.
Spend some time to have a friendly, non-work related banter with your co-workers. Conversations like these can start positive relationships. Just be genuine in your interest. Nobody likes insincere people.
Try to build a bond with your co-workers by helping them in times of need. If you see a co-employee having difficulty with his tasks, offer your help. If he accepts, make sure you have the skills. If he declines, don’t take it personally.
To create a positive atmosphere, suggest that you and your co-workers participate in a team building activity before a meeting or a team task.
Don’t wait to be asked. If you see someone struggling on a project, immediately offer a few helpful tips that will help them.
Even if it was your idea that made a task succeed, don’t take all the credit. Acknowledge that every member worked hard as a team. This will make your coworkers respect you more and see you as a team player.
Never be the cause of delay. Make sure that tasks assigned to you are done right and finished on time. Resentment starts when other’s work are delayed because someone has been slacking off at work.
Be positive. Always have a smile on your face and exude a friendly attitude even if work is up to your neck. A cheery disposition will do you more good than harm.
